Embryo 44 Day Old Hand and Foot Plate
Computer Generated Image from Micro-MRI, actual size of embryo = 13.0 mm - This image provides a left-sided view of the embryo at the end of the sixth week. Age is calculated from the day of fertilization. The embryo still maintains a C-shaped curvature, although the difference in proportion of the head to the body is no longer as extreme. The red circle in the facial area is the developing eye. The groove-like circle in the lower part of the head is the palate of the developing external ear. Digital rays, precursors to developing fingers, can be seen on the left hand plate. Digital rays in the foot plate are starting to appear, although they are not as distinct as in the hand plates. Typically, the hands develop 3-4 days before the feet. The narrowed wrist is visible between the hand plate and arm, while the ankle is also developing between the foot plate and the leg.
